First Hot Yoga Class

I have driven by Hot Yoga Inc. in Covington for years, and always thought people who would do that were insane.  I never thought I would join the ranks of the insane, but I have heard from enough people that I should be doing yoga.  I also know that I am not going to lose any weight doing yoga from home using my DVDs.  They say practicing in a hot room speeds up your heart rate and makes it a cardio workout and can burn up to 1000 calories in an hour, a lot more than running!  And the heat helps you get more flexible, which has always been difficult for me.

I just can’t deal with heat and humidity so I chose a yin class as my first class because they turn off the heat. I figured this would be the only way I could handle the first time in that room.  It was still hot because there were classes before this one that day, and all they did was open up the door to cool the room down.  The moment I walked in the room it was like being back in Cancun and I could hardly breathe.  I brought my thick yoga mat because I thought that would be needed with the harder floor.  I realized in this class I need a strap and yoga blocks to do the poses, and I have no idea what I am doing.  The hardest part is being in a position where you can’t see the teacher, but you have no idea how to do what she is saying to do and NEED to see it, then you are wondering if you look stupid or are going to tear something from doing it wrong.  It felt awkward, but I think it will get better if I watch a few classes without doing much.  I really just need to see what the poses are when she talking about them.

The one thing going to my first hot yoga class taught me is never wear sweats and a loose t-shirt again – I thought it would help catch the sweat, but baggy clothes just get in the way and sweats are way too hot.  My groupon deal for Hot Yoga Inc. gives me 20 classes over a month, and it only cost $10, so if it doesn’t work out to do this I can just do normal yoga at LA Fitness.

Week 2 Day 1 of Couch to 5K

Week 2 Day 1 of C25K

Week 2 Day 1 of C25K

After a day of rest, due to being QUITE sore, I went out again for Week 2 Day 1 of Couch to 5K. This workout is 31 minutes, with a 5 minute warm up walk, then alternate 1.5 minutes of jogging and 2 minutes of walking for 21 minutes, then walk for 5 minutes for cool down.  Instead of going to Soos Creek, I jogged around our neighborhood.  I stuck to the one workout today because I am still really sore.

Week 1 Day 2 and 3 of Couch to 5K

Despite being pretty sore from yesterday, I was determined to make the most of this weekend and was happy Michael decided to go out with me!

Week 1 Day 2 of C25K

Week 1 Day 2 of C25K

Week 1 Day 2 is a 5 minute brisk walk for a warm up, then alternating 1 minute of jogging with 1.5 minutes of walking for a total of 20 minutes, then a 5 minute cool down walk.  I felt so great after the first 30 minutes that I thought I should combine two days into one, so that is what I did.  Day 3 is the same workout as Day 2.  Michael walked while I ran ahead and back to him during the one minute jogging parts of the workout, then we walked together for the 1.5 minutes.

Week 1 Day 3 of C25K

Week 1 Day 3 of C25K

We were walking on Soos Creek Trail in Covington/Kent, and just went two miles up the trail, and then two miles back.  It was another beautiful day, and a little bit too warm but the shade on the trail made it perfect walking/running conditions.  The trail reminded us of Feralas in World of Warcraft!

Week 1 Day 1 of C25K

First Day of C25K

First Day of C25K

Today was the day I decided to finally start the Couch to 5K app to prepare for the 5K race I signed up for in Alki Beach

As luck would have it, when I plugged in my phone to the computer to quickly change my running playlist, it of course, decided I needed to update my entire music library – FML!!! What I thought would only take a few minutes ended up taking an hour and a half …

The Day 1 workout is a 5 minute brisk walk for a warm up, then alternating 1 minute of jogging with 1.5 minutes of walking for 20 minutes, then a 5 minute cool down walk.  Michael walked and I walked with him for the walk breaks and then ran ahead and back to him for the running/jogging parts of the workout.  It was a beautiful day for a walk, clear skies and not too warm.

We went to Lake Youngs to check out the trail there.  It is mostly gravel, which gets stuck in the grooves in the sole of the shoe, and sometimes pokes my feet.  There are also several hills on this trail, and we may not come back here for a while because of that.  I did the workout for the first two miles, then turned the app off while we walked back to the car, another 2 miles.  I still do not understand why this lake is so secret – what is up with that?
