Let’s say you’re walking around all alone with nothing and you find a nice-looking bag on the side of the road.
You pick it up, and it seems like a really nice bag, so you hang onto it for a while.
Eventually, though, you start to notice that it smells. At first you try to ignore it, but it gets worse.
So then you say “Well, it’s just a bag – how can it smell? It must be me,” but you know the bag still smells.
You start to dig around in the bag and you find a bunch of hidden pockets full of shit.
At first you try to seal those pockets back up, but they still smell.
Then, because you can’t help yourself, you keep going back to the pockets and realize they are getting more and more full – so much so that eventually you can’t close them anymore. Shit just spills out.
At some point you must have thought “This bag is full of shit, I should get rid of it!”
But you don’t, because then you wouldn’t have a bag at all, and you would have to carry all your stuff yourself.
So now you’re going around with a bag full of shit, and the shit is spilling out of the bag everywhere.
Even though you have a bag, you are carrying all your stuff in your hands anyway (because you don’t want to get shit on them), but you smell like shit and now your friends and family don’t want to be around you anymore.
You get angry and resentful about all the shit that everyone dumped on you, but that doesn’t stop the shit from making people think you stink.
You keep thinking of getting rid of that smelly shitty bag. But you realize that if you did get rid of it, you wouldn’t have ANY bag at all. So you keep it because it’s YOUR bag, even though it smells like shit and alienates you from everyone else.
After a while, it doesn’t matter if the shit was put there by someone else, it is still your shit to deal with.
Ultimately, you need to realize it’s better off being clean and carrying things yourself than to have a bag of shit on your back.
